Hirschsprungs Disease: Report of 8 cases with Review of Literature

Abstract
1) This survey has presented 8 cases with Hirschsprungs disease who admitted to Dept. of Surgery, Chonnam University Hospital for ten year period from 1955 to 1964 and reviewed literature on this subject.
2) In the neonate the signs and symptoms of mechanical obstruction of the small intestine and Hirschsprungs disease are virtually identi ai. Unnecessary exploration of infant with Hirschsprungs disease with mistaken diagnosis of obstruction of the small intestine can be avoided by a barium enema examination.
3) Rectal biopsy offers the only way of making an accurate diagnosis of Hirschsprungs disease in the neonate.
4) Recommended treatment consists of colostomy as soon as diagnosis is established. Definitive resection of the child attains a weight of 9 to 13 kg.
5 Experience with the Swenson abdomino-perineal procedure and Duhamel modification of Swenson operation has demonstated that it is a safe and effective surgical treatment for Hirschsprungs disease.
